How freight factoring works
You sell your invoice to a factoring company. They advance most of it now (the advance rate), collect from the broker, then send you the rest minus their fee. Some charge a flat fee; others add more for each extra 10 or 30 days.
Is factoring worth it?
It can be, if fast cash keeps the truck moving. But a 3% fee on 30-day money works out to a very high yearly rate. Compare against waiting on quick-pay options, a line of credit, or keeping a cash cushion. Watch for recourse terms, minimums and extra fees in the contract.
Questions
What is a normal factoring fee?
Many trucking factoring companies charge roughly 1 to 5 percent per invoice, depending on volume, recourse terms and how fast brokers pay.
What's recourse vs. non-recourse factoring?
With recourse, you owe the money back if the broker doesn't pay. Non-recourse shifts some of that risk to the factor, usually for a higher fee and only in certain cases.
Can I factor only some loads?
Some factoring companies allow spot factoring; others require you to factor all invoices. Read the contract.
