How IFTA tax is worked out
- Add up all miles and all gallons for the quarter to get your fleet MPG.
- For each state: taxable gallons = miles in that state ÷ fleet MPG.
- Subtract the gallons you bought (and paid tax on) in that state.
- Multiply what's left by that state's rate. Positive = you owe; negative = a credit.
This is an estimate. Some states add surcharges or use different rules, and your base state's form is what counts. Track miles by state with GPS so you're not rebuilding them from receipts. See IFTA deadlines and how to file.
